Here We Go: The Consciousness Headline Has Arrived

Six weeks ago, Anthropic published one of the more interesting AI interpretability papers I've seen in a while.
They found what looks like a small internal workspace inside Claude — a kind of computational spotlight where information becomes available for deliberate reasoning, reporting, and manipulation.
It was interesting enough on its own.
It did not need help.
And I remember thinking at the time: somebody is eventually going to turn this into "Claude is conscious."
Well.
Here we go.
The newest version making the rounds opens with:
"Breaking news, Anthropic may have solved consciousness."
No. They haven't.
Anthropic found evidence that Claude appears to use a functional architecture resembling one piece of a major theory of consciousness: Global Workspace Theory.
That's fascinating.
It's also several intellectual zip codes away from proving subjective experience, qualia, feelings, self-awareness, or anything resembling "Claude woke up."
The actual finding may be more interesting anyway.
Brains have enormous amounts of processing happening outside conscious awareness, while a much smaller subset gets promoted into something like a global workspace where it can be deliberately used.
Claude appears to have developed something functionally similar.
Not because Anthropic explicitly built a consciousness module into it.
It emerged during training.
That's the part worth paying attention to.
Because if biological brains and large neural networks can independently arrive at a similar solution for organizing higher-order cognition, then maybe the global-workspace idea isn't merely some evolutionary quirk of meat.
Maybe it's a useful computational pattern that sufficiently capable systems tend to discover.
That's a much bigger and more defensible question than whether Claude has feelings.
Unfortunately, "AI may have independently rediscovered an architecture associated with conscious access" doesn't fit quite as nicely into a 30-second video.
So we get:
ANTHROPIC SOLVED CONSCIOUSNESS.
And this is exactly how genuinely interesting AI research gets turned into mythology.
The paper didn't suddenly become more dramatic.
The headline just finally caught up to the hype I was worried about six weeks ago.
